DESCRIPTION:Every new project used to start from scratch. It doesn't anymore. This session walks through the composable building blocks our team has designed to turn new projects from multi-month efforts into multi-day ones — without sacrificing the things that make software real: security\, reliability\, and automated CI/CD from day one.\n\nWe'll cover three blocks in order. First\, the foundation: a repeatable serverless AWS architecture that runs at $10–20 per year per solution\, is secure by default\, and can be dropped into a new project in minutes instead of weeks. Second\, the reasoning behind it: the ADRs that shaped the architecture\, including the real constraints and pain points that forced our hand\, and why the design we landed on is the one that survives contact with production. Third\, the accelerator on top: our Claude tools and standards plugin\, which encodes our conventions and lets us rapidly develop solutions on top of the foundation without drifting into inconsistency.\n\nThen we'll show it working. A live demo walks through spinning up a new project from the blocks — from empty repo to deployed\, production-grade application with full CI/CD pipelines in place — compressing what used to take months into days\, with genuine production code rather than a throwaway prototype at the end of it.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation showcases how the Scientific Domain Expansion team within Content Operations transformed and modernized our approach to data ingestion\, review\, and harmonization—significantly increasing efficiency\, scalability\, and overall data quality. Previously\, creating and validating new XML datasets required substantial manual effort\, often involving 4–6 team members and covering less than 10% of mapped data over multiple review cycles spanning several days. Similar challenges arose when validating MarkLogic ODH updates\, where achieving comprehensive data coverage through manual checks alone was not feasible.\n\nTo address these limitations\, we implemented a more scalable and automated approach by leveraging ODH production data\, MarkLogic scripts\, and Excel-based validation techniques. These tools allow us to perform bulk checks across entire datasets\, quickly identify mapping issues\, and collaborate with developers to validate updates and catch errors early in the process.\n\nAs a result\, tasks that once required days of effort and multiple reviewers can now be completed by a single individual in minutes to hours—delivering faster turnaround times\, increased coverage\, and improved confidence in data quality.

This presentation describes our journey from pure vector search using Titan embeddings and Amazon S3 Vectors to a hybrid chemical name resolution system that combines deterministic token matching\, semantic retrieval\, and LLM-based chemical reasoning. Using real patent-extraction examples\, we show where vector similarity performs well\, where it fails on subtle chemical differences\, and how a hybrid architecture can re-rank candidates\, explain structural equivalence\, and improve confidence in extracted chemical entities. The presentation will focus on practical lessons for building reliable AI-assisted indexing pipelines (Phoenix) where chemical precision matters more than generic semantic similarity.

DESCRIPTION:Optical Structure Recognition (OSR) — the pipeline that detects molecular structure images on patent and journal pages and converts them into InChI and SMILES strings — has advanced rapidly thanks to modern deep learning\, yet its end-to-end accuracy is still bounded by two upstream steps: how precisely the detector localizes each structure\, and how cleanly the cropped image is passed to the OCR model. This presentation will share two recent improvements to our internal pipeline. First\, the structure detection model has been retrained on the latest YOLO architecture\, which removes Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) and Distribution Focal Loss (DFL) in favor of a leaner inference path\; the new weights deliver more precise mask segmentation and tighter bounding boxes\, improved recall on structures the previous model missed (including starting compounds in reaction schemes and substances embedded in tables)\, the elimination of thirty or more Markush fragments that were previously captured as false positives\, and meaningfully faster inference — with the maintainers reporting up to 43% gains on CPUs and the path now open to deployment on CPU and edge devices. Second\, an optional post-processing step based on Maximum Connected Components (MCC) has been introduced between detection and OCR to clean residual artifacts from the mask-cropped image\, with a known caveat for tightly-spaced table layouts where the white space between the structure and surrounding ink is too narrow for the algorithm to safely separate\; in those cases\, the pipeline still produces a usable OCR output that an analyst can finish cleaning. Both changes are intended to reduce the volume of "junk" that subject-matter experts (SMEs) must clean during curation\, with at-scale SME validation as the natural next step.

DESCRIPTION:The CAS Registry® file is the most authoritative collection of chemical substances in the world. It has been built over more than 60 years from paper structure sheets to basic online registration\, stereoregistration\, and specialist review and corrections. As any chemist knows\, but developers may not appreciate\, there can be multiple ways to draw the same chemical substance that are equally correct. Conversely\, there can be subtle\, but crucial differences between compounds that must be taken into account when determining if it is a new or existing registration. And as powerful as our existing registration software is\, there are limitations that mean our customers do not always get the most accurate chemical representation possible. Collaborative efforts in Project Phoenix between Content Operations\, Content Tech\, and DAI employees in Columbus and across the globe are working to minimize these limitations and build the Registry of the next 60 years. At the core of this effort is a modern Apache Spark pipeline on AWS EMR that processes hundreds of millions of substance records at scale\, driven by graph-theoretic algorithms that transform chemical structure representations between formats and compute structural identity through layered canonicalization correctly unifying substances drawn differently while distinguishing subtly distinct compounds.\n\nCentral to the new architecture is the Component Expression\, a unified XML representation capturing each substance's complete structure\, stereochemistry\, and metadata in a single schema-validated document\, which serves as both the standardized registry format and the direct input for holistic identity determination across all components of a substance. Equally important is the deliberate modernization of the underlying codebase\, translating decades of chemical logic from legacy C and proprietary systems into maintainable\, well-tested Java and Python\, enabling registry rule changes to be implemented and deployed in days rather than months\, and building a platform the next generation of CAS developers can confidently build upon.
